🎸 Beginner Guitarists

  • Smooth Transition: D7 → D7#5
On the “I’m gonna stick like glue” line, the move from D7 to D7#5 is very easy:
    • Keep your 2nd finger on the 3rd string, 2nd fret (the note A).
    • To turn D7 into D7#5, simply place your pinky on the 3rd string, 3rd fret (the note A#).
    • The pinkie lands one fret above your 2nd finger on the same string, producing the #5.
    • Because the pinkie completely replaces the note your 2nd finger was fretting, leaving the 2nd finger down doesn’t change the sound.
    • This makes the transition fast, stable, and perfect for beginners who struggle with full finger repositioning.
  • D7#5: A dominant 7th chord with a raised 5th
    Formula: 1–3–#5–b7
    Notes: D–F#–A#–C
We spell the #5 of D7#5 as A♯ (not B♭) because the natural 5th of D is A. Raising the 5th means raising A → A♯. Using B♭ would change the letter name and no longer represent a raised 5th.
