Simplified Chord Shapes for Beginners

Beginners will most likely find Eb Major quite challenging. We have included one barre voicing, and 2 other voicings which require a fair stretch, but there is an easy way around this:

Simply play a D chord starting on the 3rd fret instead of the 2nd fret, and only play the top 3 strings.

This is actually the second inversion of Eb Major. You are playing all the correct notes (Eb, G, Bb), but not leading with the root not (Eb).

Eb: Eb-Bb-G
🎸 Frets Notes Fingers
e|---3--- ← G 2nd
B|---4--- ← Eb 3rd
G|---3--- ← Bb 1st
D|-------
A|-------
E|-------

B Major is usually played as a barre chord, but we have included an open voicing which is the second inversion of B Major. You are playing all the correct notes (B, D#, F#), but not leading with the root not (B). It sounds fine and offers a much easier alternative without needing the full barre form right away (see charts).

B: B-D#-F#
🎸 Frets Notes Fingers
e|---2--- ← F# 1st
B|---4--- ← D# 4th
G|---4--- ← B 3rd
D|---4--- ← F# 2nd
A|---X---
E|---X---

Bbdim7 is also very easy to play, especially after A Major... it's like A7 with an addition on the 1st fret, string 5 (see charts).

Bbdim7: Bb-Db-Fb(E)-Abb(G)
🎸 Frets Notes Fingers
e|---0--- ← E
B|---2--- ← Db 3rd
G|---0--- ← G
D|---2--- ← E 2nd
A|---1--- ← Bb 1st
E|------
